Role of Indian Olympic Association

Firstly India took part in Olympics on 1900 at Paris. India was represented by Norman Pritchard, who was an Anglo Indian holidaying in Paris at that time. IOA is responsible for the preparation & participation of competitors in Olympic Games & also statewide events like Commonwealth & Asian Games are arranged by IOA (Indian Olympic Association). At national level there are separate federation in each Sports which assists the Indian Olympic Association & preparation of sportsmen. The selection process of the sportsmen in Olympics are generally dependent upon the basis of performance at national level. Anyways, sometimes special selection trials are also held for selecting the competitors for participation at Olympic Games & other international events.

After formal selection process, competitors attend training camps. The National federations are assisted by the ‘Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports’ in Patiala, which provides highly innovative training for athletes.

The other responsibilities undertaken by the Indian Olympic Association are as follows:

* Promoting and developing the Olympic Movement
* Deciding the organisation of National Games
* Protecting the amateur status of sportsmen
* Maintaining liaison between the Government of India and member federations or associations
